New Life Home Trust operates as a Charitable Children’s Institution (CCI) under Kenyan law. As a CCI, we do not process adoptions but work closely with registered adoption agencies and government authorities to ensure the best outcomes for children.

Foster Care

What is Foster Care?
Foster care involves the temporary placement of a child in the care of an individual or family who is not the child’s biological parent, relative, or guardian. Foster parents provide love, care, and support until a permanent solution for the child’s welfare is determined.

Types of Foster Care

  1. Temporary Foster Care: Short-term care provided during emergencies, lasting from 24 hours to a maximum of 3 months.
  2. Long-term Foster Care: Extended care for a period of 1 to 3 years, renewable annually, for children requiring a more stable environment.

Who Can Foster?
To qualify as a foster parent, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a Kenyan citizen or a resident in Kenya for at least 12 months.
  • Be between 25 and 65 years old, as a single person or part of a married couple.
  • Provide a Certificate of Good Conduct.
  • Present recommendation letters from an Area Chief and/or a religious leader.
  • Show financial and emotional capacity to meet the child’s needs.
  • Submit a medical report from a licensed physician.
  • Obtain consent from their spouse and/or children within the family.
  • Demonstrate parenting skills and the ability to provide a safe, nurturing environment.

The Foster Care Process

  1. Visit the Sub-County Children’s Office in your area.
  2. Attend an interview and fill out the necessary application forms.
  3. Undergo a home visit and assessment conducted by the Children’s Office.
  4. Receive approval and a Foster Care Certificate valid for one year (renewable annually).
  5. Attend training on parenting skills, foster care expectations, and child development.
  6. Be matched with a child for placement through a children’s home.

What is Adoption?
Adoption is the legal process of permanently placing a child with parents who are not their biological family. This process transfers all parental rights and responsibilities to the adoptive parents, offering the child a forever home.

Types of Adoption

  • Kinship Adoption: Adoption of a relative, such as a niece, nephew, or grandchild.
  • Local Adoption: Adoption of a Kenyan child by Kenyan nationals.
  • Foreign Adoption: Adoption by foreign nationals or Kenyan citizens with dual citizenship.
    (Note: Kenya has an indefinite moratorium on intercountry adoptions, meaning foreign nationals cannot currently adopt Kenyan children.)

Who Can Adopt?
To qualify as adoptive parents, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be Kenyan citizens or joint applicants in a marriage of at least three years.
  • Be aged 25 to 65, with a minimum age difference of 21 years between the child and the applicant.
  • Present a Certificate of Good Conduct.
  • Submit a medical report from a licensed physician.
  • Prove financial stability to meet the child’s basic needs.
  • Obtain consent from their spouse and/or children within the family.

The Adoption Process in Kenya

  1. Initial Inquiry: Visit a registered adoption society to begin the process.
  2. Assessment: Undergo evaluations by the adoption agency for both the applicant(s) and the child.
  3. Child Eligibility: The adoption society issues a certificate declaring the child free for adoption.
  4. Care Period: Foster the child for a minimum of three months.
  5. Court Application: Submit an application to the High Court for approval.
  6. Court Order: Receive an adoption order if all conditions are met.
  7. Registration: Register the adoption order with the Registrar General of Adoption to update the child’s details in the Adopted Children Register.
